Cancer vs. The Hockey Mom is a heart-wrenching true story about a young mother of four, the youngest being only three weeks old, who finds out she has stage IV cancer. The short book, only eighty-four pages on an ereader, is written by the young woman’s husband who provides incredibly touching insight into the life of a family learning to live with a death sentence hanging over their heads. Rob Broadhead details his wife’s life from the birth of their fourth child and as she goes through the pain, both emotionally and physically, of learning to live with a diagnosis that will end in death. Surprisingly the author doesn’t write a story of sadness but one of gaining perspective of what is important in life and how to cherish each and every day. He does an incredible job portraying a young wife and mother who tries to live a life around doctor appointments, needles and tubes. He also shares his own personal account of the pain at watching the woman he loves struggle to make each day count, something that most people take for granted.

This book touched me personally as it is much like my own life. I found it very helpful to read Mr. Broadhead’s thoughts and feelings as he lived this journey with Suzie and also reading how Suzie prepared for the worst-case scenario, however subtle that preparation sometimes would be. This is a very hard story to read (I recommend a lot of tissues nearby) but it is one that everyone should read because it leaves a message of learning to live each day like it may be your last and enjoying your time on earth to the fullest.

“...one that everyone should read...”

This book is ultimately amazing, very well written and catches the audience in a sort of cheering spirit for a positive outcome.  Broadhead displays the true fight of not only a mother, wife, friend, sport’s enthusiast’s fight against cancer; it shows how a family fights the disease just as hard.  Upon reading this book was a little leery about reading a book on the topic of cancer.  I put my preconceived notions behind myself and pushed on.  I am glad that I did.  Although, the beginning of the book was a little slow; I, as a reader, kept wondering when the “hockey mom” portion would appear in the story.  I would like to reiterate keep reading the story picks up and then the reader truly understands why Broadhead built up the storyline in anticipation of how hockey was used to fight (essentially) cancer.

Broadhead tells the story of his wife’s battle with cancer in a way that draws the reader in and keeps them wanting to know more, despite the fact that we as readers know the end of the story.  Cancer vs. the Hockey Mom left me humbled with much respect for the entire Broadhead family.  This story has a very sad topic: Cancer.  But the story is not all doom and gloom.  Broadhead approaches the recap of wife, Suzie, eloquently from the diagnosis to after her passing.  This book was very touching, very emotional, and very “real.”

“...very touching...very real...”
